UN Resident Coordinator

Israel Dessalegne, UN Resident Coordinator.

The Resident Coordinator (RC) is the leader of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and as such plays a central role at the country level in making possible the coordination of UN operational activities for development. This is to ensure the alignment of UN assistance with national development priorities, plans and capacity building in the context of internationally agreed treaty obligations and development goals. In adddition, placing the UN centrally in development and international cooperation in the country.

Prior to joining Swaziland, the Resident Coordinator for Swaziland, Israel Dessalegne, served as UNDP Deputy Resident Representative (2009 – 2012) and Resident Representative ad interim, (2008-2009) in South Africa. He was Management Advisor and Head of the RDT Secretariat at the Regional Service Centre, South Africa (2004-2008); Deputy Resident Representative in the Gambia (2000-2004); Acting Deputy Resident Representative in Tanzania (1998-1999); Between 1991 and 1998, he served as Assistant Resident Representative in India, Ghana, and Eritrea. He was a Junior Professional Officer/Economist in UNDP Zambia (1988-1990). He began his career as a Junior Professional Officer for UNIDO in Trinidad and Tobago. He holds an MA in Economics from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
