World Health Day (7 April)

The 2016 World Health Day was commemorated on April 7 which also make the birth of WHO. Established in 1950, this event has a theme each year to draw attention to a current world health issue. The Theme for World health Day 2016 was “Beat Diabetes”.

To commemorate this day, WHO Swaziland country office created awareness on diabetes by engaging in a robust media publicity which involved live interviews with the national radio. HIV/TB and Hepatitis Officer Dr Sithembile Dlamini-Nqeketo who was representing Health Promotion Officer Dr Kevin Makadzange, featured in Letishisako (a current affairs programme played on national radio between 7am and 8am on weekdays).

Dr Dlamini-Nqeketo explained what World Health Day was all about and further unpacked the theme for this year’s commemoration. She educated the listeners about the dangers of diabetes and how one could prevent the onset and progression of the disease. WHO also supported the screening for NCDs which was carried out by School Health Nurses in the Hhohho, Lubombo and Manzini regions.
