Advocate for global action on HIV

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) is the main advocate for global action on the HIV epidemic. Launched in 1996 to substantially strengthen UN efforts to address the epidemic, UNAIDS now leads and supports an expanded response aimed at universal access towards prevention, treatment, care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
UNAIDS is the main advocate for global action on the HIV epidemic. Launched in 1996 to substantially strengthen UN efforts to address the epidemic, UNAIDS is an innovative joint venture of the United Nations, bringing together the efforts and resources of the UNAIDS Secretariat and ten UN system organizations to respond to AIDS. The Secretariat headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland with staff on the ground in more than 80 countries. Coherent action on AIDS by the UN system is coordinated in countries through the UN theme groups, and the joint programmes on AIDS. The cosponsors include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank. The work of UNAIDS is guided by nine priorities:

· We can reduce sexual transmission of HIV

· We can prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV

· We can ensure that people living with HIV receive treatment

· We can prevent people living with HIV from dying of tuberculosis

· We can protect drug users from becoming infected with HIV

· We can remove punitive laws, policies, practices, stigma and discrimination that block effective responses to AIDS

· We can stop violence against women and girls

· We can empower young people to protect themselves from HIV

· We can enhance social protection for people affected by HIV

In Swaziland, UNAIDS provides technical and financial support to HIV interventions and continues to advocate for an expanded national response to HIV. UNAIDS support to the national response on HIV is channelled through the Joint UN Programme of Support on HIV and AIDS (JUNPS) that encompasses all United Nations support to the national response on HIV in 2009-2015. The JUNPS has five priority areas of support: Integrated HIV Prevention for Young People; Comprehensive HIV care package; Social protection for orphans and vulnerable children, people living with HIV and the elderly; Strategic information and; Stigma and discrimination of People Living with HIV/AIDS.
